An authoritative and dynamic speaker, Moyra empowers people with new ideas. She tells them the facts 'straight up'. Her GENTLECARE program has a dramatic effect in facilities that use her system. Moyra has always been controversial. She has led the fight against the use of restraints with elders. What makes Moyra Jones relevant is that her ideas are based on an unusual blend of clinical and management practices, with "hands-on" experience as a therapist and family caregiver. She knows what works in today's health care scene and economy. Currently she is involved in developing GENTLECARE Units across Canada, the USA and Italy; combining educational workshops with on-site consultations in the facilities she visits. A major four year project in Washington State involving psychiatric facilities, nursing homes and Adult Family Group homes is underway. A research component to the project will commence in 1999. In Abbiategrasso, a small community outside Milan, Italy, a new GENTLECARE facility is under construction. In addition a research project into the use of GENTLECARE strategies is in its third year of data collection. Moyra has earned an international reputation as an advocate for people experiencing dementing illness and for their families. She works with management groups, family caregivers, support groups and community agencies, who want to provide a better quality of life for the elders in their care. Moyra graduated from the University of Toronto as a Physical and Occupational Therapist, and has studied health care and business administration at the University of Saskatchewan and Simon Fraser University. She was awarded the Canadian Volunteer of Merit Award in 1987, for her work in the field of Alzheimer's disease. In October, 1997 she was awarded the Outstanding Service Award by the Alzheimer Society of Washington State. Moyra lives in New Westminster, B.C. Canada, with her husband Robert, her son Marc and her basset hounds, Michael J. and Hardtimes Morgan. |
