I attended your conference (Creating the Right Environment) here in North Bay on Nov. 14 and you blew me away again with your wisdome and insight! It was my third time seeing you speak and I love you more each time. We are implementing the GENTLECARE philosophy in our facility. I can't wait until we are completely GENTLECARE-functional. I am excited to be part of a team that will help family members and friends of our residents to continue playing a significant role in their lives through meaningful activities. I am also interested in making changes to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Community & Social Services Standards for nursing homes under Section E: "Recreation and Liesure Services". Subjects: "Standards and Criteria" and "Guidelines". Can you point me in the right direction? I didn't notice the Module entitled "Creating the Right Environment" on your "new revised format for 2001" title page at the Nov. 14 conference in North Bay. I would like to see you speak on all the Modules... Nit picky, maybe; but I don't want to miss a thing! You are the Brightest Light on the Horizon! Sincerely, Lara.

Moyra, The ECU at the hospital here is adopting your program. It's been about 3 years since I took the program and utilized it as best I could. I wondered if you had included any new material in your program and if so, could you send it to me or tell me how to access it. I'm glad to make contact with you again and hope to keep in touch with you. If you get out the Calgary direction, we are 87 miles NE of the city. Cheers! Joy

A co-worker and I attended a Gentlecare Workshop on Creating The Right Environment. We were truly inspired and now want to implement Gentlecare in our Psychiatric Hospital. We have the backing of our Program Manager and Nurse Manager. We are in the process of forming a commitee. The response has been great by members of our Multidisciplinary Team. Our first meeting is next week. We realize this is going to be an extreme challenge because of the way our wards are set up. But we are looking forward to the challenge. Hopefully, we will make a difference in our clients lives and be more client orientated. The response from other nurses has been very supportive. Which makes me tend to believe that we are part of a team and really care for our clients, not our paychecks. A good feeling. Thanks for such an informative workshop. We would appreciate any comments or suggestions from you. Thanks, Catharine Cole

Hello. I am an RCA student at Sprott-shaw and we just started using you Gentle Care text book. I am finding it very hard to retain the information you have but in this book. This is the first time our school is using this program so it is on a trial basis. I was hoping that you could give me some hints on how to better retain the information that you provide in your book. My grade depends on it.

I read your book and think it's great. If they ever build a nursing home in our small but growing city, I hope they build one with Gentlecare in mind. Do you have any ideas on how to get money or the government to look at how much we need a nursing home here. Just thought I would ask. I think I am looking for a miracle. My father has Alzheimers and is in a continuing care unit in a hospital. It's pretty good, but now that I have read your book Gentlecare, I'm not so sure. Thank-You Ingrid Blasius

I had the opportunity to hear you speak in 1998. At that time I did not work with residents that have Alzheimers, but now I do. I have gotten your book out and am reading it again. I always believed in your Gentlecare way and thought you were wonderful to listen to. Do you have a mailng list that shows where you will be speaking in the future?

I have read your book Gentle Care and found it extremely useful in understanding my Dad's frail condition. My Dad has since passed away (Feb. 2001) and I would possibly like to be an advocate for your approach. Are you having any workshops in Surrey or the Lower Mainland in the near future? My phone # is 604-599-4080. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely Nancy Anderson

Hi Moyra and Marc... It was so nice to meet you both this past week in Holland at Resthaven's introduction to Gentlecare. I hope that you both got back home safe and your trip was uneventful... I think that Gentlecare will add life to our unit and am looking forward to starting the process. I look at this as what I would want if/when?? I would have to go to a long term care facility... Take care of yourselves and keep spreading this wonderful model in hopes of making many lives more fulfilled.... I admire you both..... Thanks, Lisa Wigfield, RN, BScN

Dear Moyra Jones: As part of a talk to the Maine Healthcare Association in a few weeks, I am providing an overview of various "person-centered" approaches to dementia care, and am including Gentlecare as one of these approaches. I would like to provide participants with information about training possibilities and costs. Would you direct me to that information? Thank you. Lucie Arbuthnot

I have been reading your book on Gentlecare and am very interested to know where you might have some facilities available. My Mother in-law has altzheimers and she lives in Puerto Rico, it would be a small miracle if I could find help for our family there. Your book has helped me so much to understand so much more about the disease I just wish I had a way to pass on some of the information. Thank you for what is your lifes work it's truly a blessing to many I'm sure. Thank you Patti Roque

I am an Assistant Director of an Alzhiemer's residence. Currently I'm reading your book and I find it very interesting.Much of what you discuss we have already implemented them into our program prior to me finding your book. Your insight on Alzheimer's Diease is wonderful. I was so tried of reading about all those medical models. Your book is a nice change. If you have any further information coming out I would like to know about it.

Dear Ms. Jones, I'm not a medical professional. My wish has long been "if only I knew how I could make him happy" or if only he could tell me...referring to my husband, who has Alzheimers. Since this of course can't happen, your book is the closest thing I've found that gives me some hope of at least making his life a little more live-able/easier. Your insight into how/what the AD victim is possibly feeling or thinking is very helpful. Your philosophy/ideas and breakdown of 'prosthesis' has taken me from my eyes being wide shut to trying to be more wide open with each interaction. I've heard "The 36 Hour Day" touted as the best book on AD; I read much of it about 3-1/2 yrs. ago & said interesting but 'not applicable'. Recently I went to the library in search of help & took out 6 books - among them were the 36 Hr Day & Gentlecare. This time as I skimmed thru the former I said "applicable but not giving me the answers I want"; I started reading 2 others, then turned to Gentlecare...it's the only one I renewed and am still working on - it "blows me away" to say the least. Some of the simplest statements you make are just incredibly helpful like "try substituting terror for anger". I wish all families, Social Workers, other caregivers & Doctors could have a copy. If he could I know my husband would thank you for writing this - and I surely do.

I had the opportunity to see your book at a friends home the other day. I was absolutely impressed with the way it was written, I only got through the first little bit before I had leave, but it is a book that really captures your attention. I am an R.N. working in the community in Contning Care and see this as a very valuable resource. We relate to plenty of clients with alzheimers and their families and I know that having the book will be an asset. I'm looking forward to purchasing my own copy. Congratulations on a great book and thanks. Elsie

Dear Ms. Jones: My husband is 56 years old , and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease four years ago. He's now in the middle stages of the illness. At this time, he's attending an Adult Daycare Center. The staff there are not especially knowledgeable as to the special health care needs of the younger, energetic individual afflicted with AD, such as my husband. I'd like to know if you have contact information for Day Care or Long Term Care facilities, actively in practice with your Gentlecare system in the following areas: San Diego, CA., the state of New Mexico, New York City Thanks for your help. I attended your workshop in Helena Mt. in April of this year. I was impressed with your Gentlecare approach to Alzheimer's victims. I purchased the book at the workshop and my administrator is currently reading it. We are also planning to purchase 5 more books and would like to start training our staff as soon as possible. Are there any other products you have to assist in the training process, such as posters or items to create excitement in the Gentlecare system? If so, how could we obtain some of the products? I would appreciate a response as soon as possible. Thank you.

Hi, I work at Rotary Manor (Senior Citizen Residence) in Dawson Creek. I am on the Gentlecare Committee. We are in the process of painting the bathroom of one of our dementia residents. We are going to paint around the bathroom door (dark blue border) and around the sink (dark blue border). We are not sure how to paint behind the toilet to make it stand out. When Moira was in Dawson Creek she had a picture of what we should be doing, but now when we are actually getting to the painting we are not sure how to do this. Do you have a picture? Can you e-mail me with the answer? I read the 'Gentlecare' book but all it says is to make sure the toilet is obvious. Not sure exactly how to do this. Any help would be appreciated. You can e-mail us right at Rotary Manor by this address. manor@pris.bc.ca Thanks

I am a family member of a non-dementia resident in a care facility in Tsawwassen, B.C. I have had the good fortune to meet Moyra and Marc during two modules of the Gentlecare training program being offered to the staff of the facility. I am very impressed with the concepts and presentation of ideas as they relate to quality of life and care for all seniors. With many years of Project Management behind me, I am presently exploring involvement with the Tsawwassen facility in implementation plans for many Gentlecare ideas and look very forward to future involvement with Gentlecare.Congratulations on the Website!

I came in contact with your site through one of the search-engines. What's on the site is interesting to me. Working now for about 21 years in homes in the Netherlands where people with various types of dementia are being cared for has learned me that there are many ways to care and nurse them but that none of them has THE answers. Maybe your philosofy can. In my search of sites all over the world with the subject dementia it has occured to me that there are not so many with a lot of information on it. I myself are the webmaster of a dutch site which has over 70 pages now with pure information about many types of dementia. Not only theoretical information about the diseases but also how to communicate and interact with people who suffer from dementia. When you can read and understand dutch the site has probably the information you need. Keep up the good work. I will study your book and see how I can fit it in my daily work.

Our local library recently bought and displayed your book on "Gentlecare". Reading it was so very encouraging. Thank you as well for the Website. As a member of the "public", I was especially interested in the explanations of how the progressive damage to the brain is expressed by those we love and care for. Just being prepared for changes and challenges is helpful. Most of all I was glad to find someone else who believes that there is much that can be done to support a family dealing with Alzheimer's disease function in a loving way. Keep spreading your philosophy. It would be wonderful to have a way to know where there are carecenters using your approach.

loved Gentlecare, I too am an alzheimer advocate in my own small way in my job as a practical nurse in a long-term care facility. but... change is slow to come. I know you know what it's really like out there. Can you send me any info/support/suggestions for my daily practice to get the message of individualized care to my coworkers/facility? Teaching by example only gets you so far.

I am origionally from WA state and I learned Gentlecare at Callaway Gardens and at Beverly Health and Rehab, both in the Tri-Cities. I believe in Gentlecare 100%.I am only an aide so how could I present this to my supervisors. I've been an aide for almost five years and Gentlecare is all I know, it just comes natural to me. I just dont know how to teach others to do the same. Ive been hoping and praying for guidience in this, I hope you can help somehow.
