I justed attended your first presentation at the Midland'Mi.USA Sr.Sevices Center.I was the gentleman in the first row in front of you.I was so motivated that I am going to offer to be a nonprofessinal volunteer to help in any way possible.I am going to suggest that rather than go back to business as usual until your next presentation thatwe start now to review at least one area where gentle care could be looked at.Do you have any suggestions or comments.Do you agree we should do something? Also do you know the nearest location to us that you visited that has done something about gentle care.I just read comments from your guestbook mentioning your video .Would you advise how to order and cost of the video.I would donate it to our SR.Sevices.Does it cover the items in your presentations? Hi my name is Julie Dodd. I am taking the resident care attendant course at Sprott Shaw College in Nanaimo.. We are just reading your book in class and we have a assesment on it on Friday of this week. I am having problems understanding some of the information that is in this book so I am not able to memborize it... I was wondering if you could help me in some way. Because I am scared of failing this assesment. Well I just have another thing to say your book is really good. Thanks for you time. Also I couldn't stop and put the book down myself. You have inspired me to use the stuff that is in your book no matter what the facility tells me what to do.

Hello Moyra,I would like to thank you and your son for visiting HomePlace last Spring. I realize and know that you are very busy, but I appreciate you making the time to visit. Vicky McCarty told me that you may be interested in helping us with staff education. If that would be possible, it would be wonderful. Please just let me know. I am always interested in your input. I like your website. You have done a wonderful job and have good search engines, easy to find. Thank you for all you do in this field of caring for those with dementia and Alzheimer's. Nancy Gentry

Dear Moira: An update on Gentlecare at Shepherd Village and then a request for help. The update first. I am the chairman of the subcommittee that is "giving birth" to Gentlecare at SV. It is a wonderful opportunity for me, personally, to develop and improve my understanding and comfort level with the concepts, as well as the very necessary exercise for us to pursue here. We are developing our own care guide which will, hopefully, be so well used by staff that we will constantly have to re-produce it to keep it from looking sloppy! We don't want it to like all those manuals which everybody has that look unused - because they are! Staff continue to be enthused and excited and small elements are already in place. For example, a family memer has donated a clothes basket full of brightly colored towels and about 4 ladies, every evening, which is when they usually become very agitated and often scream, sit in a circle with the nurse (who is doing paper work) and fold the towels. You won't be a bit surprised to learn that they hardly ever scream when engaged in this activity! Family involvement, meaningful purposeful activities. Sound familiar? Now for our request. Can you give us any guidelines, or names of places with appropriate tools, so that we can document those vital, but non "tasky" interactions with residents that are so much a part of Gentlecare. My direct care staff will not have access to a computer for any documentation, so I am hoping to find some kind of tick sheet with space for comments, but have found nothing as yet. We want to be able to document what we are doing for all kinds of good reasons. Hope you can help us or direct us to someone who can. Hope the summer has been a good one and that you are well.

Aug 7/02, Dear Moyra and Staff, I work in a sucure facility, private rooms with private washroom. We have incorparated much of your gentlecare, which is great, I have read your book, Gentlecare and am interested in purchasing it, the problem though is so are 2 of my co-workers interested in purchasing your book, thus it is possible to get a bulk discount? or failing that a break in shipping cost, 3 books being shipped to one address instead of 3 books separately? Also if you could advise me on this problem it would make life a dream for my resident: Resident male came from LTC facility 1 hr.away, speaks no english, only finnish, I speak German to him, which I think he understands as he replys to me in finnish which I don't understand. We are having difficulty putting him to bed at night, I tried the other night 3 times to put him to bed, changing his diaper and taking off his trousers is perhaps the challenge, I offer him the washcloth to was up which is ok, the washcloth for pericare which is ok, I take off his diaper looking the other way, (your fingers do the walking) the try to be reassuring, and do the task with as much dignity as possible, his gown (sorry no pj's from family) is on when I attempt to take off his trousers, my resident resists care and tends to become aggressive, please any tips ideas to help me for my resident would be greatly appreciated, sincere thanks in advance, Wilhelmina Sonser

I will soon be a graduate of a nursing program here in the U.S. I currently work in an Alzheimer's facility and hope to continue to do so when I become an RN. Eventually I would like to open up my own facility here in the U.S. I enjoyed your book very much and hope that I can use the knowledge gained to help the residents in my current facility and hopefully the residents in my own facility one day. Thank you so much.

I am currently studying to be a residential care attendant. Your text book is part of our curriculum. When I picked up your book I could not put it down I was so interested and moved by your spirit and your love for others. It is the first text book I have ever read that I wanted to read every single page. I appreciated you sharing the story of your father it really helped me to relate what you were teaching to a real person. I am so motivated to make a difference in the life of the people that I will be caring for. It is so encouraging to know that there are people like you in our world. Thank you!!

Dear Ms. Jones, I am a 2nd year nursing student, in the process of writing a position paper on the issue of ECU and LTC units being the residents' "HOME". I was very discouraged with the institutionalized setting of the local hospital's EC unit while I was doing my practicum at the end of my first year. This unit was set up to work efficiently on schedule, with routine and structure to suit the needs of the staff, not the resident. I must say I was sadly dismayed with the feeling I had when I walked into the facility every morning. I am ashamed to say that I participated as a student in the "assembly line process" of AM care of my residents', rushing and hurrying to get them out to breakfast, through breakfast, cleaned up, and positioned in a semi-circle in the day room around the TV, so the health care workers (I won’t call them Professionals) could sit down together. I was torn and felt a heavy sadness inside as I went through the motions of the set schedules, it had an atmosphere of waiting to die. When I strayed from the routine and actually slowed down to talk with and enjoy the residents', the heaviness inside lifted and I actually found that I could reach and make a connection with my residents’, I found through touch, soft conversation, singing and humming, eye contact, sitting with and being with the resident physically, mentally and emotionally, that the residents that I cared for (even the one’s that were labelled as non-verbal, not here, etc) responded to my approach. It was an awakening for me, it wasn’t what I had been lead to believe, these "patients" were not non-verbal, or unresponsive, they just needed the right approach or triggers to open up a whole life time of experiences, to continue to live on. It also opened up for me an area where I want to work, I wanted to be a

I think your work is outstanding and I support your efforts and accomplishments. I work for Pinehaven Nursing Home in Waterloo Ontario and I will be finished my "Gentle Care" course wed. April 02, '02. I am very proud to be a part of this program and I intend to practice it. I was touched to know that someone out there cared enough to get a thing like this started. I am new to this field of work and coming in to it I was disappointed when I saw how the elderly had to live under "our" rules/lifestyle or whatever was easiest for "us". When I was hired at Pinehaven and they told me they were practicing "Gentle Care" I felt so relieved for the elderly and I immediately had to find out just who this Moyra Jones was. I just want to say, even though I don't know you (although I feel like I do), I am greatful to you for all your efforts and hard work! I wish there was some way I could help to get the message to others about gentle care.

All I can really say is WOW. I am so impressed with your book and insights into Dementia care. I am the Unit Coordinator of the Alzheimer's Dementia Unit at Jefferson Health Care in Lee's Summit. I am also a LPN. Many of the things I have read in your book I have already been trying to incorporate into resident care and I come up against so much resistance from staff and activities.. Then when your book was recommended to me and as I was reading it I kept saying to myself this is what I have been trying to do, in a round about way. I plan to study this book and push for putting this wonderful system into practice on my unit. Please let me know of any workshops in the Kansas City, Mo. area and I would be very interested in trying to set up a consultation with administration at our care facility.

Moyra Just to let you know our private college in BC has switched over to your module from the one we had been using. The videos make sense and the book is easy to read. I love teaching it because it corresponds with some of the ways that I see practiced in the Special Care unit that I sometimes work in. Thanks for making it all make sense! I have spent the last 10 years learning everything I possibly can about Alzheimer's and dementia. My mother had AD and passed away in December 1999. Prior to her death, I enrolled in the Human Services Program at the University of Phoenix to obtain a BS in Human Services. I will graduate next spring and will go on to the Masters Program in counseling or social work. The last year of my mother's life she inspired me as no other mother has inspired their offspring. She spent countless hours studying with me (although she didn't know it)during our visits together. Often, I would read my textbooks to her as she listened and smiled. She had no idea what I was talking about, but we were together and I was learning more because of it. If it had not been for the GENTLECARE seminars and book, I would never have thought to involve her in that way. Because of my mother and GENTLECARE, I will soon be a 50 year old, undergraduate pursuing a new career in Eldercare. Thank you, Moyra. God bless you.

My daughter has used your program in a faciliy where she use to work. She now works in another facility with the Altzheimers unit. Would this be acceptable for her to copy from this binder and give the pages to her families? Thank You

Thank you for your Gentlecare program. I have attended Validation Therapy workshops, but feel that your book will have much to offer. I work in a long term care facility assisting new residents and offering family members support. My goal is to teach our staff the Gentlecare program. Most of long term residents have some type of dementia. It will also be motivating for the nursing assistants who provide 80% of the care and are so vital to our residents. Will you be doing any workshops in the Northeast Tennessee area? Please contact me with a list of workshops and any suggestions. Thank you for the caring person you are.

Dear Moyra, I am an R.C.A student at Sprott-Shaw College in Kelowna, B.C...I am 33yrs of age, and have 2 children. I am in my last module of our course, I am a proud, staight "A" student. I thoroughly enjoy your book, and I am enlightened by your lateral approach to the Elderly. I will always remember this when I am in the field of genuine care. Our instructor Sandra is an R.N, and stresses your lateral approach most seriously, and is doing her best to contribute to the change by teaching her students to really make a difference. Thankyou for your illuminating book, and also making a difference in the health care field... Angela Reiger, student at Sprott-Shaw College in Kelowna
